UDE Workshop with Mercator Fellow Prof. Dr. Kaori HAYASHI

The Research Training Group GRK 2833 “East Asian Futures” held a second workshop with Mercator Fellow Prof. Kaori HAYASHI, PHD (University of Tokyo). This final workshop of the summer took place on August 8, 2024 at the Centre for Global Cooperation Research of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). Alongside Prof. HAYASHI, some of the RTG’s doctoral researchers and Qualifying Fellows as well as five members of the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST), Institute of Polital Science and AREA Ruhr at UDE have given brief introductions into their field of research.

After a greeting given by UDE Vice-Rector for University Culture, Diversity and International Affairs Prof. Karen A. SHIRE, PhD, Mercator Fellow Prof. Kaori HAYASHI, PhD, introduced the participants to her field of research with a brief talk on “Japanese Media in an Age of Digitization”. Following a round of discussion, Prof. SHIRE shared insights into her new research training group, which deals with “Labour Markets Crossing National Borders”.

Prof. Dr. Florian COULMAS (IN-EAST) then talked about “The Demographic Future of East Asia as a Research Topic”, before postdoctoral researcher Dr. Aimi MURANAKA (IN-EAST) followed up with insights on “Qualification and Skill in the Migration Process of Foreign Workers in Asia: Case of Vietnamese IT Professionals in Japan”.

From the Institute of Political Science of UDE, Prof. Dr. Axel Klein gave an overview of “Populism in East Asian Democracies: The Case of Japan”, while Prof. Willi Jou, PhD (Waseda University) answered the audience’s questions.

Following a short break, Dr. Kerstin LUKNER, Managing Director of AREA Ruhr, shared her research findings on “Recent Changes in Japan’s Security Policy”. Lastly, the doctoral researchers Kohei MATSUURA and Igor SEVENARD, and two of the RTG’s Qualifying Fellows, Erik RIEN and Aniela TYBORSKI briefly introduced their research topics before a final discussion wrapped up the event.

The event was moderated by RTG speaker Prof. Dr. Christine MOLL-MURATA and organised by scientific coordinator Simone KORTUNG with the support of student assistant Yasmin TALEGHANI.
