Requirements for Doctoral Researchers
Successful applicants will have graduated in East Asian Studies, or from disciplines both in the humanities and the social sciences, and will have an excellent command of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. Native speakers of these languages who have graduated in the humanities or social sciences with an excellent knowledge of English are also eligible for positions. Ideally, applicants will already have basic research experience in East Asia and have training in the humanities and/or in social science methods. Moreover, they must have intrinsic motivation to work in an interdisciplinary group setting. Applicants who have already obtained a Ph.D. degree in any field of study can not be considered for this position as per the German Research Foundation’s stipulations.
The participants of the research training group will orient the topics of their dissertations towards one of the four subthemes (1) language, religion, and ideology, (2) self and society, (3) resources and technology, and (4) sovereignty and governance.
Required Format of Applications
Applications should contain, in exactly this sequence,
- a cover letter
- a CV including relevant information on the candidate’s academic formation
- certifications of degrees, academic performance, and tested proof of language skills, especially the proficiency in one or more East Asian languages
- a synopsis of the prospective dissertation /postdoctoral research topic (maximum of 5000 words, references not included)
- a writing sample in English (ideally an excerpt of the master’s or doctoral thesis or a translated summary thereof)
Applicants are requested to upload these materials in one pdf file onto the applications uploading platform below.
In addition, two confidential letters of recommendation from scholars who can address the fitting of the applicant to the profile shall be sent by the referees to GRK 2833 or be uploaded by them. After the evaluation process, shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit a letter of motivation before the interview. Format of letters of recommendation: only pdf files. Please state the name of the applicant and your own name in the designation of the file. If the upload was received by the system, a notification will appear below the upload window, stating: “File [XXX LoR for XXX].pdf uploaded successfully”.
