On April 17 and 18, 2025 the Institute of Modern History at Academia Sinica in Taipei hosted a two-day workshop titled “Confronting Historical Transformations: New Frontiers in Modern History” to celebrate the Institute’s 70th anniversary. The workshop was attended by Research Training Group doctoral student Buyun GONG.

The workshop’s theme followed a series of internal workshops that began in November 2023 under the initiative of research fellow Paul KATZ, in which the institute’s research fellows presented with clear and accessible language the historical questions they are engaged with, as well as their academic significance and the breakthroughs they hope to achieve. Encouraged by the results of this experiment, the effort was expanded into a larger academic colloquium as part of the anniversary celebrations. During the workshop, members shared their current research projects and discussed in panels the new frontiers (including new topics, new fileds, new perspectives, new methods, and new sources) of Chinese modern history.

Further information on the event may be found on the hosting institute’s website.
