The conference, titled “Yi/chang 異/常 – Ab-/Normalität in China”, was organized by Prof. Dr. Andrea Bréard (University of Erlangen–Nuremberg) and took place on November 26, 2023 in Erlangen.

The 34th annual conference of the German Association for China Studies explored the concept of ‘normality’ from the perspective of Sinology. It provided a space for discussions on philosophy, universalism, particularism, definitions of normality, standardisation and implementation, social norms, differentiation from the mainstream, Chinese characteristics (Zhongguo tese 中国特色), gender norms and roles, and related topics.
