Review: Inaugural Event

The DFG research training group “East Asian Futures: Visions and Realisations on National, Transregional and Global Scales” of the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen has started successfully. The inaugural event of this collaborative project of the research association Alliance for Research on East Asia (AREA) Ruhr took place in the restaurant Beckmanns Hof on the campus of the Ruhr University Bochum on Monday, October 9, 2023. There were about 60 guests present, among them also RUB chancellor Christina Rheinhardt.

At the beginning, Prof. Dr. Denise MANAHAN-VAUGHAN, Vice-Rector for Structure, Strategy and Planning (RUB) held the opening message. Speaker Prof. Dr. Christine MOLL-MURATA and co-speaker Prof. Dr. Markus TAUBE then gave an introduction into the event. The historian Prof. Dr. Rüdiger GRAF from the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam and the sociologist Dr. Lisa SUCKERT from the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies Cologne outlined the challenges of this approach respectively from a historical and a social science perspective and discussed them with the audience. The event was also displayed as a video conference.

Afterwards, the participants embarked on a tour through the Chinese Garden of the Ruhr University and engaged in lively discussions during the buffet in the evening.

The Research Training Group GRK 2833 “East Asian Futures” was successfully introduced to the University Alliance Ruhr at the Ruhr University, Bochum on Friday, October 9, 2023.
