“Future Pasts. Writing History in the Anthropocene”

Bio
Sandra MAẞ is a professor of Transnational History of the 19th Century at Ruhr University Bochum, where she has been since 2017. Her current research interests focus on historiography in the Anthropocene and global family history. She earned her Ph.D. in 2004 from the European University Institute in Florence with a study on the history of colonial masculinity in Germany, which was published by Böhlau in 2006. Following her doctorate, MAẞ served as a research assistant at the University of Bielefeld’s Department of Historical Political Research. There, she completed her habilitation in 2014 with a study titled “Kinderstube des Kapitalismus? Monetäre Erziehung im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert,” which was published by De Gruyter in 2018. After a temporary professorship at the University of Cologne, she became the deputy director of the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research in Braunschweig from 2015 to 2017. Among her recent publications are the journal article “Geschichtswissenschaft im Anthropozän,” published in Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte in 2025, and her monograph “Zukünftige Vergangenheiten. Geschichte schreiben im Anthropozän,” published in Göttingen in 2024.
